Reigning champions Garbally College continued their dominance of the Connacht Schools’ Senior Cup when they ousted newcomers CBS Roscommon and sealed the double at the Sportsground.

It was a 47th title for the Ballinasloe outfit who were ahead at half-time and Stephen Mannion, son of former Ireland international Noel, was the match winner for the second year running.

Garbally were 14-0 in front at the break after some expert finishing from their backline. The tries came from wingers Sean Horkan and Shea Hennessy, while Mannion orchestrated everything from out-half.

Garbally scrum-half Matthew Devine was shown a yellow card and two Mark Purcell penalties reduced the arrears on the resumption.

But CBS Roscommon were in their first final and they faded with Mannion adding his try along with two more from the influential Oisin McCormack.

Garbally started well and Horkan nearly scored in the second minute but he couldn’t get to the ball before it crossed the dead-ball line after a block down.

CBS Roscommon were forced into the concession of their first penalty in the third minute but Mannion pushed the difficult kick left and wide of the posts.

CBS had a couple of brief forays into Garbally territory but they couldn’t get their set-piece right, and lock Fergus Finneran stole three lineouts early on.

Centre James Carry almost scored down the left wing in the 14th minute but he was penalised for double-movement.

Despite all of their domination Garbally still hadn’t scored and as the wind began to ease, CBS Roscommon looked comfortable with a chance to finally gain a foothold.
