Galway West Junior Minister Seán Kyne has given approval for €2.9 million of funding for projects from the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport, under the Dormant Accounts legislation.

The projects being funded include the establishment of community sports hubs, community coaching programmes, youth leadership programmes, as well as sports measures for disadvantaged communities to support the National Physical Activity Plan.

“The Dormant Accounts legislation introduced a scheme for the disbursement of funds from unclaimed accounts and assurance policies to support personal, social and educational development projects, persons with a disability and disadvantaged communities,” said the Minister.

“In Galway funding of over €80,000 will facilitate the establishment of a community sports hub as well as youth leadership projects. The community sports hubs provide information, support and advice on a wide range of sports and physical activities to make it easier for people to get involved and engage in more active and healthier lifestyles.

“Communities in Galway will also benefit from the funding being allocated to national organisations,” he added.
