Donnellan hoping to be a big hit against Bulgarian opponent
Date Published: {J}
Galway professional boxer Alan Donnellan is a man that likes to stay busy as he has his third professional fight in less than six months and the Craughwell native couldn’t be happier.
Donnellan, a quantity surveyor graduate of LIT who is now based in Limerick, will appear on the undercard of the European Super Bantamweight title fight between Willie Casey and Paul Hyland on Saturday week, November 6, in the University of Limerick arena.
‘Donnie’, who is trained by Ken Moore in the famous St Francis boxing club which produced Andy Lee, has been in training for eight weeks for this fight and has sparred approximately 90 rounds with some of the top boxers in the country including Irish Light Middleweight champion Gary ‘Spike’ O’Sullivan.
He has already won his first two contests and has shown a true warrior spirit that is proving to be really crowd pleasing and more of the same can be expected in UL when he battles with Bulgarian hardman Zahari Mutafchiev, who has a record of two wins to three losses.
Mutafchiev is well known in Ireland as a tough operator who can mix with the best so Donnellan will have to be on top form to keep his unbeaten record intact.
There is talk that the father of one could be back in action as quickly as two weeks later as he has been put on standby for the Brian Peters promoted show in Castlebar on November 20.
Donnellan (22) is not taking anything for granted and is taking things one step at a time.
“Training for this has been great and Ken has really upped the tempo of late, and I have sparred a lot of rounds for this with the best boxers in Ireland both amateur and professional.
