THE Dominican College school community on Taylor’s Hill enjoyed the official opening of their new all weather astro turf hockey pitch and health and fitness suite last weekend with a school get together and a past versus present pupils match. The fourth, fifth and sixth class students of Scoil Rois, their feeder school, also shared in the celebrations.

Construction of the full size pitch started last August and was completed just recently. The fabulous new facility is certified by the FIH and is the only such facility located on school grounds west of the Shannon.

The pitch will cater for all the lucky students of Dominican College, a school that enjoys a long successful hockey history, a sport embedded in the history of the college. It will complement the wonderful existing sporting facilities on site which include the full size gymnasium and the new fitness suite.

Along with hockey, the pitch will cater for Taylor’s gaelic football, soccer and athletics teams and will enhance the provision of the PE curriculum.

Eilish Keaveney, the principal of the school observed: “This is an exciting new development for the entire school community and better enables the school to cater for the training of our teams and playing of our matches on site. More importantly, it will enhance our ability to provide our girls with further opportunities for the learning of life lessons on the training ground and the field of play”

She added that the project has been successfully completed thanks to the fund raising efforts of the parents, the great generosity, hard work and unwavering support of the Dominican Sisters, the Board of Management and the entire staff.
