Dominant Devon B edge one step closer to Division 2 title
Soccer Wrap Up with Mike Rafferty
While it is their brethren in the Premier Division who more often find themselves in the limelight, Salthill Devon B are creating their own standards in Division Two. On Saturday afternoon they were keeping their third clean sheet in succession when making it six wins on the trot as a victory over Bearna Na Forbacha all but clinched the title for them.
For the home side, the loss pushed them down the pecking order in the chase for the second promotion spot as they vie with Galway Bohs and Kiltullagh for that runners-up position.
Elsewhere there was a surprise result in Drom as the Premier Division holders Salthill Devon dropped two points when held to a draw by St Bernard’s and Athenry took advantage to move back to the top on their own as they secured a late winner to defeat Corrib Celtic.
In the remaining top-flight game there was no shortage of goals or late drama as Mervue United and West United shared the spoils in Fahy’s Field.
There was a big shock in Dangan in Division 1where second placed University of Galway were beaten by Corrib Rangers, and that in turn allowed Dynamo Blues leapfrog them into second position.
DIVISION TWO
Bearna Na Forbacha 0
Salthill Devon B 1
Salthill Devon B have set the standard in Division Two throughout the season, and while teams have come close to matching them, no one has got the better of them yet as they maintained their unbeaten league record for the 15th time on Saturday afternoon.
A 2-2 draw between the sides earlier in the campaign was one of just three occasions when David Carr’s charges did not secure full points, but with the finishing line in sight and two games left it is difficult to see the table-toppers slipping up at this stage.
