Dog pound set for revamp
Galway’s dog pound is in line for a major revamp. The City Council has confirmed grant approval of €125,000 for improvements to Galway City Dog Pound at Ballybane.
The Council have been working on a new design for the building and the plan is to commence works to the facility later this year.
Once the design is completed it will go to public tender and the hope is to have a contractor appointed by June or July of this year and works will be completed in about three or four months from then.
Galway City Councillor Terry O’Flaherty (Ind) welcomed the funding boost. She had lobbied for years for heating to be provided at the building. It has been confirmed that raised beds have been ordered for the dogs instead of them having to sleep on concrete floors.
“Galway City Dog Pound is something we as a city cannot be proud of. It is a very stark and basic building and would not encourage members of the public to visit the facility to take home one of these unwanted animals while they are being left there waiting to be euthanized. I am hoping the improvements that take place as a result of this funding will encourage more people to visit the pound and take home unwanted dogs,” she said.
