CITY TRIBUNE
Divine concert from Resurgam and Vespera
The acclaimed choir, Resurgam, which is directed by New Zealand-born, Galway-based Mark Duley, is teaming up with Galway’s new baroque string band, Vespera, for a pre-Advent concert in the city this Sunday evening.
Under the leadership and tutelage of baroque specialist Claire Duff, Vespera is made up of 10 world-class string players who are living in and around Galway, and who have embraced the opportunity to explore classical music which was written in the years from about 1600 to 1750.
Resurgam, which was established in 2003 by Mark Duley, is a project-based ensemble of up to 32 voices comprising some of Ireland’s finest choral singers. The choir specialises in presenting the sacred repertoire of the renaissance and baroque periods, so the groups are an ideal match.
Vespera and Resurgam will be in St Nicholas’s Collegiate Church this Sunday, November 21, to present a programme in the Abendmusik (Evening Music) series.
Mark originally developed Galway’s Abendmusik concerts in conjunction with Music for Galway for the city’s tenure as European Capital of Culture. The events moved online due to Covid and proved very popular.
Sunday’s concert is entitled Abendmusik; Light of Midnight will include the young choristers of St Nicholas’ Schola Cantorum.
Marking the fact that it’s taking place on the Sunday before Advent, the programme will focus on Advent cantatas by J.S. Bach and Dietrich Buxtehude. Motets by Hammerschmidt, Purcell, Handel, Schütz, Praetorius and Scheidt will also be woven through.
