Diversity the key to Culture Night

From north to south and east to west, Culture Night will be celebrated across Galway this Friday, September 22,

The Connemara village of Roundstone will mark the occasion with a three-strong group exhibition, a talk and an art workshop.

The exhibition will be an opportunity to see work by Galway artist Jennifer Cunningham which were recently shown at Dublin’s Ashford Gallery, as well as work by Catherine Gaston. Catherine is an abstract painter based in Belfast who has a strong relationship with Roundstone and Inishlacken island. The third artist is Rosie McGurran, who lives locally and is hosting this event. Rosie is exhibiting new work of her own and will also hold an open studio for Culture Night.

Events in Roundstone kick off at 2pm this Friday with Pencils on the Pier, a tutored drawing workshop with Jennifer and Rosie . This is an opportunity to examine the rich visual built and natural landscape of Ireland’s most painted harbour. Participants should bring a sketchbook and pencils.

The exhibition of painting and drawing by Jennifer, Catherine and Rosie at Rosie’s studio will open at 6pm, This in opportunity to see work made by three artists who have worked together on Inishlacken island.

The President painting the President, a talk by Mick O’Dea, president of the Royal Hibernian Academy will be held in Roundstone House Hotel at 8pm. Mick will talk about his portrait work, focusing on his recent commissioned portrait of President Michael D. Higgins.  This will be a great opportunity to hear the artist talk about his process and the making of an historic portrait.
