Diverse voices at Cúirt Over the Edge event

Bern Butler, Riona Mac Eoin and Paul McCarrick will feature in the annual Cúirt / Over the Edge showcase for emerging writers, which takes place next  Thursday, April 22, at 1pm, via Zoom. They will be joined by the winners of this year’s Cúirt New Writing awards, Bernadette Lynch and David Morgan O’Connor, as well as the festival’s Common Currency Writer in Residence, Suad Aldarra.

Galway City woman Bern Butler, who writes prose and poetry, has been short- and long-listed in the Listowel, Fish and Over the Edge writing competitions. Bern has a background in adult education, mostly prison education and was co-ordinator of the Writers in Prisons scheme. She co-edited the first Irish anthology of prison writing, Another Place, and wrote, directed and produced prison dramas. With an MA in Writing from NUIG, she’s working on her first poetry collection and her work has been published in Force 10, The Grey Castle, ROPES and Skylight 47.

Fiction writer Riona Mac Eoin co-owns Briarhill Veterinary Clinic in Galway City, where she works. She’s interested in psychology, specifically the impact of childhood on a person’s adult life, and volunteers with the youth group, Foróige. On a career break last year, she spent six months in New York, which is where she discovered her love of writing.
