Dispute leads to closure of ‘Tiny Traders’ market
Galway City Tribune – Galway Tiny Traders Village ceased operations last weekend as a result of a dispute between those who run the village and the operators of the Nuns’ Island Theatre, where the market had been held since April of this year.
Speaking to the Galway City Tribune, Manager of the Tiny Traders Village, Paul David Murphy, said that changes required by Galway Arts Centre meant it was neither feasible nor affordable for them to continue operating at the site.
“We were happy that Tiny Traders Village was running really well every week and we loved being there, but we would have lost our autonomy over the event under these requests.
“At the start of September, much to our shock, we were given a new list of requirements by Galway Arts Centre management to be met within a four-week period.
“These changes would have altered the amount of pitches and traders we had, our aesthetic, our layout, our weekly set-up schedule and increased cost on remaining traders greatly as well as making it much less practical and logistically problematic for us,” said Mr Murphy.
“These changes were not viable for us and we communicated this clearly to Galway Arts Centre management.”
A statement released by the Galway Arts Centre said they had not been informed that the Tiny Traders Village would close.
