Disconauts going Deeper

TAKE 2 DJs, some seriously funky tunes and throw in some live percussion and you have Galway dance mavericks Disconauts, who begin a series of gigs at Deeper, Eglinton St (formerly The CellarUnderground) this Saturday night.
Disconauts formed when Pádraic O’Connor and Keith O’Hanlon met each other while playing in different venues in Salthill, during Galway’s mid-nineties club boom.
“We DJd under different names and we came upon the name Disconauts one night after a long brainstorming session,” says Pádraic. “We’re both into similar music and the ‘Star Treky’ space thing so the name came out of that. That was 12 years ago, I think – we’ve been at it a long time!”
The idea to fuse their DJing skills with an in-the-flesh percussionist came about when they met affable Englishman Mark Logan. “We were playing in the GPO and Mark had just moved to Galway and had come in to the club a couple of times,” Pádraic recalls. “We started talking about music and we had the same tastes – he’s into soul, rare groove and we were into funk and disco.
“We asked him to come in one night and play some percussion. We’ve played with a lot of percussionists over the years – and I hate saying it – but he is the best. It felt right playing with him from the very first night, even though he didn’t know the music.”
