Date Published: 20-Jun-2012
Rape Crisis Network Ireland is calling on the Minister for disablilty to adopt recommendations outlined in a report to be launched in NUI Galway this evening.
14 rape crisis centres, including Galway contributed to the report, to produce the first detailed set of statistics on sexual violence against people with disabilities.
It found that survivors of sexual violence with a disability are more likely to have been subjected to a greater number of incidents compared to those with no disabilities.
Female victims with a disability are also more vulnerable to attack as they age compared with females with no disability, whose vulnerability falls with age.
The report ‘ Sexual Violence against people with disabilities: data collection and barriers to disclosure’ will be launched at NUI Galway this evening.
It coincides with the 4th international Summer school on disability.
