Devon consigned to another last-place finish

Athlone Town took another huge step towards securing the First Division title as Garbhan Coughlan’s strike early in the second half was enough to sink battling Salthill Devon at Drom on Friday night.

As Salthill Devon’s stint in the League of Ireland draws to a close, Athlone’s looks very likely to continue with a return to the top flight despite James Keane producing a marvellous display for Devon to give the Midlanders a tricky evening.

Despite Devon working hard to try and salvage something, they have now lost seven on the bounce, with their last result coming on July 26 when they defeated Cobh Ramblers.

Losing the likes of Derek O’Brien and Curran proved pivotal to Jumbo Brennan’s squad, as the returning Enda Curran – who left during the transfer window – was superb on Friday night with a goal being the only thing missing from his performance.
