Developers revise proposals for controverisal Knocknacarra site
Revised plans for a multi-million euro residential and commercial development on the Western Distributor Road – including more than 90 new homes – have been submitted to Galway City Council.
Last February, Ardstone Home, part of the Dublin-based investment fund Ardstone Capital, applied for permission to develop the 6.5-acre site on the corner of the Ballymoneen Road and Western Distributor Road.
The site – where permission for a Lidl supermarket was previously refused on two occasions – was to be developed to include 91 new homes, four ground floor commercial units and a corner block of commercial units over three floors and a creche.
However, the Council raised “serious concerns” over the plans, and ordered extensive redesigns due to the scale and design of the commercial units, the proximity of those units to the road, and the design of the apartments.
Planners also queried whether the applicant had sufficient legal interest to form a new access roadway through the adjoining Leargán estate.
The applicants have now removed the Leagán access from the plans, as well as moving the commercial buildings back from the main road. Access will be from Ballymoneen Road.
