Galway Bay fm newsroom – Galway West TD Derek Nolan has backed Alex White’s bid to become leader of the Labour party.
Deputy Nolan is now the only Labour TD in Galway and was one of eight party members to table a motion of no confidence in Eamon Gilmore earlier this week.
Junior Health Minister Alex White confirmed his bid to become leader earlier today and is now set to face Joan Burton in a two-way battle for the role.
A new Labour leader will be put in place on July 4 following a postal ballot of all party members.
Deputy Nolan told Galway Bay fm news that he believes Alex White is best placed for the role as he has the skills necessary to articulate the strong values of the Labour party.
He says the Labour party has a distinitive identity which Minister White holds very dear.
Speaking at his announcement in Dublin today, Minister White said the leadership battle is a chance to re-energise the party after its election defeat.
