Galway Bay fm newsroom – The Department of Health says that every effort is being made to achieve a fair and sustainable solution for all school-leavers with intellectual disabilities in Galway and nationwide.

The commitment comes as Galway Brothers of Charity is now meeting with the families of 13 intellectually disabled school-leavers to discuss their future training opportunities, four of whom have very significant needs.

The service provider estimates that a budget of 419 thousand euro would be required to provide the adequate five-day service.

However, it’s working with funding of 109 thousand euro, leaving a 310 thousand euro shortfall with particular impact on the four school leavers with the most significant needs.

The Department of Health concedes that some places offered to individuals will be based on current capacity and will not fully address individuals’ requirements.

It adds that individuals who are not allocated a place that fully meets their needs will be wait-listed for the remaining element of service.
