Galway Bay fm newsroom – A study of the economic and social impact of the air service on the Aran Islands needs to be wide-ranging, according to a Galway Senator.

Senator Fidelma-Healy Eames has asked Gaeltacht Minister, Dinny McGinley to ensure the study includes the impact of an air service on island business, education and emergency services.

The Aran Islands air service is operated under a PSO – public service obligation contract.

The tender for a one-year contract was advertised recently and the Department is due to announce an operator for the service shortly.

Islanders are concerned about the future of the service which has already been reduced from a 3-year to a one-year contract.

Speaking to Galway Bay fm News, Senator Healy-Eames says the study needs to take all aspects of the air service into consideration.
