The Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht has agreed to give the county council a contribution towards a multi – million euro deficit for works in Connemara.

County Manager Martina Maloney told a meeting of the county council that the allocation was expected before the end of the year.

Galway County Council says the Department owes it over 8 million euro for the works at Caladh mor pier on Inis Meain and Kilronan harbour.

However, the Department claims its only obligation is to pay the original sum on the contracts.

The issue was first raised over a year ago, and efforts have been ongoing to recover money owed.

County Manager Martina Maloney says the Government Department has now agreed to give a contribution towards the deficit before the end of this year.
