Delegates Turn Ire on Loughnane

OFFICIALS from the Galway Hurling Board are set tomeet up with Ger Loughnane in the coming week to discuss whether or not he should stay on as manager of the county’s senior hurling team in the wake of last Saturday’s dismal defeat to Cork in the All-Ireland qualifiers.
The monthly meeting of the Board on Tuesday night heard that there has been no communication between Loughnane and Galway officials since the two point loss at Semple Stadium brought an end to the 2008 championship campaign.
It is understood that 15 club delegates spoke out against the current manager when the manner of the defeat to Cork was raised at the end of the meeting in Athenry on Tuesday night, while a much smaller number said that some of the responsibility would have to lie with the players.
Loughnane was appointed to a three year term in September of 2006, but set a target of delivering an All-Ireland titlewithin two years – a claim he was reminded of in the immediate aftermath of the defeat in Thurles.
