Galway county council is insisting that it’s a lack of finance and not a lack of staff that’s causing long delays in repairing local roads.

At a meeting of Galway county council last evening, it emerged that over 300 staff have been let go across all departments in the council since 2008.

There’s speculation that over 100 more could go by the end of February.

23 million euro or 73 percent of this year’s road budget has already been spent to September.

Director of services Frank Gilmore says financial constraints mean they must prioritise road repairs.
