STRONG backs, heavy rain and light forwards all contrived to easing the workload of the four umpires in this hard fought Group D senior hurling championsip clash at Kenny Park, Athenry on Sunday evening.
Both teams, along with Abbeyknockmoy referee Sean Moran and his officials, deserve a fair measure of credit for their endurance in completing a match which at times drifted into the water sports category.
Saturday evening’s cloudburst along with a steady day’s rain on Sunday always meant that the second match of the Athenry double bill would be under serious pressure – it did survive in the end, but only just.
