DECLINE IN SERIOUS INJURY ROAD COLLISIONS IN GALWAY

2011 was the safest year on Galway road according to the latest statistics for the number of people "seriously injured" in car crashes.

Figures from the Road Safety Authority show that 28 people suffered serious injury in road crashes around the city and county last year, compared to a peak in 1996.

A peak was recorded in 1996 of 139 serious road injuries.

However, from the year 2000, a gradual decreasing trend is noted starting from 61 serious injuries in 2001 to 28 recorded last year.
