Independent city councillor Declan McDonnell has been elected Mayor of Galway.

The Mervue man and former PD, has 18 years service as a councillor and was announced as Mayor at the city council meeting in the last half hour.(4:40PM)

He’ll be elected under a five year pact between the three Fine Gael councillors, three Fianna Fail councillors and three independents

Intense negotiations took place to broker the deal, and it was finally agreed late on Friday evening

Labour are bitterly disappointed to have lost out on taking control of the council through a deal, given that their five members make up a third of the council

However Fine Gael says Labour were not flexible during negotiations
