Decision on proposed Aran fish farm six months off

Galway Bay fm newsroom – It’ll be at least six months before any decision is made by the Department of the Marine on a proposed fish farm off Inis Oirr.

BIM has applied for a deep sea salmon farming licence at a site roughly six kilometres off Inis Oirr, which it says could create hundreds of jobs.

Inland Fisheries Ireland and other campaigners have raised concerns regarding the scale of the proposed development.

Galway West Deputy Eamon O’Cuiv raised the matter in the Dail this week and was told that a decision was at least six months off.

The Fianna Fail TD is once again calling on BIM to withdraw its application until sufficient research has been carried out to determine whether there is any threat to wild salmon stocks.
