Decision day for Kenna

THIS coming Monday will be a pivotal day for Galway United in planning for next season with the club due to sit down with manager Jeff Kenna and discuss plans for the future, while Monday also marks the first day that clubs can sign players for the 2009 campaign.

Kenna is on a well-deserved break with his wife Jacqui in the Maldives, and is uncontactable this week, but he is due back to hold talks with club CEO Nick Leeson on Monday, and the club is hoping to resolve the manager situation as soon as possible.

Kenna joined United on a two and a half year deal in April, but with a clause that his position would be reviewed in October, a situation both parties agreed to as a sort of ‘safety net’ depending on how the season panned out.

Given that United were in a relegation battle right up until the final whistle on the last day of the season, those talks were understandably put on hold until the club’s situation on the pitch was resolved, resulting in a two-month delay, and the successful outcome in the fight against relegation strengthens the club’s hand in trying to convince Kenna to stay.

Unfortunately from a United point of view, it also means that Kenna has attracted the attention of other clubs, and he has been linked with a host of jobs both here and in England.
