Dawn Dairies site in Galway identified for high-density housing
From this week’s Galway City Tribune – The former Dawn Dairies site on the Dublin Road has been identified as being ideal for high-density housing – a proposal that could lead to high-rise accommodation at the three-acre Renmore plot.
The site, which has been vacant for several years and is owned by the McHale Group, has been earmarked as a location with ‘opportunity’ in the Draft Development Plan 2023-29 currently being considered by councillors.
The document, which has been seen by the Galway City Tribune, is due to come before a meeting of the Council in early January and identifies a number of key ‘brownfield’ or underutilised sites in the city where regeneration is a focus.
“The [Dawn Dairies] site has potential for redevelopment for high density housing. This development should include for a development of high architectural design quality, strong street frontage which may include for accommodation of small-scale local services,” states the draft plan.
Elsewhere on the east side of the city, the new development plan is proposing the ‘sensitive redevelopment” of the Royal Tara China site in Mervue, also owned by the McHales.
The document states that the 4.6-acre site on Connolly Avenue has industrial zoning, reflecting its former use.
