Daniel on song as new Cois Cladaigh director
Arts Week with Judy Murphy
Growing up in Oranmore, music was central to Daniel Beuster’s life. In addition to him studying various instruments, his parents were also deeply involved in singing. His father Martin was a member of the renowned Cois Cladaigh Chamber Choir while his mother, Ulrike, was in the choir of St Nicholas’ Collegiate Church.
Now, Daniel is the new choral director of Cois Cladaigh following the retirement of its founder, Brendan O’Connor, after 40 years in charge.
Cois Cladaigh will be performing their first public concert in two years on Saturday, April 2, in St Nicholas’ with a programme of sacred and secular choral music, old and new. There will be songs to celebrate Spring and new beginnings, along with several Marian hymns, Daniel explains. And in a gesture of solidarity with Ukraine, there will also be a folk song from that country, entitled Plyna Kacha. The song, about young soldier going off to fight in a foreign war, has more recently been associated with people who were killed in Kyiv’s Independence Square in 2014. They were protesting against Vladimir Putin’s puppet president, VIktor Yanukovich, who had refused to sign a co-operation agreement with the EU despite the fact that Ukrainians had voted overwhelmingly to do so.
