The final go-ahead for the realignment of a dangerous stretch of road on the N17 has been given.

At a meeting of the County Council last evening [21/7], councillors voted for the N17 Carrownurlaur Bends Road Improvement Scheme.

Councillor Tom McHugh also said that it’s important that a 1 kilometre stretch of road at Carrownurlaur is incorporated into the M17 Tuam to Claremorris motorway when its built.

Councillor Seán Canney agreed that the two roads should be ‘co-located’.

Director of Services, Frank Gilmore said that the M17 project could be delayed for several years because of the state of the economy.

However Mr. Gilmore said they would look at the design of the M17 and incorporate the current stretch of road as far as possible.
