Damage done by M6 construction could run to €millions

THE damage caused by heavy lorries along minor roads servicing the construction work on the M6 motorway could run into millions of euro.
And there are no guarantees that the construction company will foot the bill for the repairs to these roads – many of which have been extensively cut up.
Residents along the minor roads stretching from Athenry to Ballinasloe are up in arms over damage caused to the roads and boundary walls.
This is due to the volume of heavy lorries carrying fill to facilitate the construction of the motorway. Some roads have 800 lorry loads of materials being transported on a daily basis.
It is a condition of the contract that the firm engaged to construct the M6 repair the roads and carry out restoration works where damage has been caused.
But it has now emerged that this cost as much as €10 million as some roads have been destroyed almost beyond recognition.
