DADS bring Murphy masterpiece to An Taibhdhearc
Dunmore Amateur Dramatic Society (DADS) will perform Tom Murphy’s The Gigli Concert in the city’s An Taibhdhearc Theatre this Sunday, April 10.
Tuam-born Tom Murphy is Ireland’s greatest living playwright and The Gigli Concert is among his finest works.
The play centres around JPW King, an Englishman living in Dublin and a practitioner of Dynamotology, a dubious form of modern therapy based on psychological and philosophical principles in which even JPW himself seems to have little faith.
A mysterious and troubled client identified only as Irishman, who yearns to sing like the legendary Italian opera singer Beniamino Gigli enters JPW’s chaotic world, seeking Dynamotology sessions.
In between, the audience encounters JPW’s unattainable love Helen as well as witnessing his trysts with his lover Mona. As the drama evolves epic forces are at work to alter the characters’ lives.
Following his powerful directorial debut for DADS last year with Frank McGuinness’ Someone Who’ll Watch Over Me, Philip Macdonnell has again assembled the multiple award-winning cast of Martin Silke, Ollie Turner and Joan Walkin.
DADS are in the middle of a run on the amateur drama circuit and have won various acting, production and directorial awards, most notably winning Best Overall Play (Open and Confined) in the Western Drama Festival in Tubbercurry.
■ Tickets for the Gigli Concert this Sunday night at 8pm are available from An Taibhdhearc on 091-563600.
