Cup semi-final weekend for Galway WFC sides

It is a make or break weekend for Galway WFC as the club have two teams in National Cup semi-final action tomorrow (Saturday).

The Galway WFC senior side are a top four side in their league and recently drew 2-2 with Wexford and the two sides go head to head again tomorrow in Ferrycarrig Park in the last four of the Women’s FAI Senior Cup.

That was in the midst of an impressive run of unbeaten games and while they did not exactly set the world alight in a 1-0 quarter-final win over DLR Waves, they were by far the better side on the occasion as a McKenna Doyle header was enough to see them through.

No doubt, Billy Cleary’s side will go into the game full of confidence and with players of the experience of Shauna Fox, Ciara Cormican and Meadbh de Burca, they can carry the day and make a first-ever cup final.

The other semi-final will feature Peamount United and Shelbourne with the two winners meeting in the decider in the Aviva Stadium.

Galway WFC were crowned FAI Women’s U-17 Cup champions recently when defeating Peamount United in the decider in Eamonn Deacy Park and tomorrow at 5pm they return to the same venue for the league semi-final in which they face Sligo Rovers.

Phil Trill’s side came out on top of a recent league meeting between the sides, as they topped their group and they will fancy their chances of going all the way to another cup decider.

Backboned by a lage amount of players who came through the Cregmore club, players like Shauna Brennan, Jane Trehy, Kate Slevin, Kellie Brennan and Saoirse Healy they will not lack confidence as they face yet another big challenge.
