The Director of the Cúirt International Festival of Literature, Sasha de Buyl, is stepping down after three years at the helm to pursue creative opportunities outside Galway.

As a result, the Board of Cúirt and Galway Arts Centre is seeking a new Festival Director for the annual event.

Cúirt is one of Europe’s oldest book festivals, and a leading voice for literature, nationally and internationally.

Established in Galway in 1985 as a three-day poetry festival, it has grown to a week-long event that includes fiction, non-fiction, poetry, genre writing, debate, events for young people, community-focused activities, visual art and film.

For the past three years, under Sasha’s direction, Cúirt has achieved a sustained increase in public funding, expanded its production team, rebranded, and secured national media partnerships.

During the pandemic, Cúirt led the way by presenting events in a digital / hybrid format.

Under Sasha’s stewardship, the festival presented three strong and diverse programmes and was recently awarded a landmark grant from the Arts Council, securing multi-annual funding.

“Working on the festival has been one of the most rewarding roles of my career,” Sasha says. “Though it has been challenging at times with the recent years’ uncertainties, I am incredibly proud of what we have achieved as a team.”
