Cuimhní on show in Oughterard
An exhibition of paintings and prints by local artists Leah Beggs and Kathleen Furey, entitled Cuimhní (Memories) is being held at Oughterard Courthouse from this Friday, July 16, to Sunday, July 25.
It’s a visual response to archaeological and historical information about the area in which they live, combined with their own imaginings and experiences of walking in the landscape.
Leah is originally from Dublin while Kathleen is from Galway and both now live in Oughterard. This show is the continuation of a journey for both artists who, in previous work, have responded to themes of landscape, history, emigration and language. This current work consists of paintings in oil and acrylic on canvas, and paper and mixed media prints on paper.
Their exhibition was originally due to take place last year as part of the Galway 2020 Small Towns Big Ideas Project, Set in Stone, which invited local artists and groups to respond to research by archaeologist Bill Daly and replica material created by Brendan Hodgers. Finally, a year later, it’s going on display in the courthouse.
