Fianna Fáil newcomer Michael Crowe from Bohermore will be happy with a strong vote in the city in yesterday’s General Election — with 68 of the 145 boxes open, he had achieved 13.6% of the vote, according to tallies.

Of the Galway West boxes opened at the count centre in NUI Galway at the time of going to press, the majority are ‘city’ boxes, with some rural. And early indications are that there is likely to be a battle for the fifth and final seat between the PD’s Noel Grealish and the Green Party’s Niall Ó Brolcháin.

So far, Labour’s Michael D Higgins is topping the poll with 3,771 votes (14.95%), followed by Michael Crowe in second place with 3,430 (13.6%) of the vote.

Fine Gael’s Padraic McCormack has 2,877votes (11.41%), with Frank Fahey on 2,713 (10.76% of the vote) and his party colleague Eamon Ó Cúiv on 2,202 votes (8.73%)
