Crowds and betting down substantially for Galway Plate Day

The attendance and betting were down substantially at Ballybrit yesterday for Galway Plate Day as punters battled bad weather.

Gallway Bay fm newsroom – Just over 14 thousand people went through the turnstiles, down just over four thousand on last year.

Betting was down 747 thousand euro across both the ring betting and tote.

Just over a million euro was wagered with the bookies, down just under half a million euro on last year.

The Tote betting also suffered with the total of just over 676 thousand euro down just over 254 thousand on last year.

Among those attending yesterday’s meeting were President of Ireland, Michael D Higgins and his wife Sabina, former Ireland soccer manager, Brian Kerr, British and Irish Lions player, Seán O’ Brien and RTE presenter, Maura Derrane.
