Creggs completes three years’ preparation on blueprint to capitalise on community potential
A new village plan for Creggs – the culmination of three years of work in the local community to map out the future for the coming decades – will be unveiled at a launch next week.
It’s the brainchild of Creggs Rural Development, which liaised with consultants MKO Design to draw up the plan after taking soundings from right across the local community – and taking stock of the existing environment, including heritage features, planning design and concepts.
Village visits were conducted, and there were numerous consultations between the consultants and the local community, including with pupils in the local national school.
Due to lockdown, many of the meetings were conducted via Zoom and the result is a plan which takes stock of the village features, infrastructural needs and the design concepts which will underpin planning for the village in coming years.
The Village Plan also took on board national blueprints, such as the National Planning Framework, regional plans such as the Regional Spatial and Economic Strategy and local plans like the Galway County Development Plan.
With the community straddling the border of both Galway and Roscommon, cognisance also had to be taken of the regional hinterland, where the village is the focus of a vibrant community.
Even prior to the launch of the plan, exciting developments are taking place in the village, with progress visible in terms of walking infrastructure and sporting infrastructure at both Creggs RFC and Creggs GAA.
But not so visible – said a spokesperson for the Creggs Rural Development – is the work that has been done in terms of bringing high-speed fibre broadband to the village and work is now ongoing on the creation of a remote working hub in the Parnell Historical Centre.
“Creggs RFC now boasts four full sized pitches, two of which are fully floodlit and Connacht’s only World Rugby approved 4G artificial all-weather pitch,” they said.
“A floodlit amenity walkway measuring around one kilometre around the rugby pitches is another valuable leisure amenity in the area and is well used throughout the year by local walking and running enthusiasts.
