Galway City Council says it’s not in a position to open the City Museum 7 days a week.
The response comes following a call by Councillor Padraig Conneely that the free facility should be open everyday during the peak tourist season.
He claims that up to 100 visitors were disappointed when they tried to go into the museum, which is based at the Spanish Arch, last Monday, but the doors were closed.
The City Museum reopened last month after a major facelift and is open every week from Tuesday to Saturday.
A spokesperson for Galway City Council says that due to the recruitment embargo they can’t open 7 days a week, as they don’t have the staff.
The spokesperson added that since the reopening of the museum last month, visitor numbers have significantly increased with an average of 800 people passing through the doors each day.
The Council says it will consider opening times for the museum if circumstances change in the future.
