CPO details revealed as new Kirwan junction plan proceeds

Galway City Tribune – Details of the Compulsory Purchase Order (CPO) to transform the Kirwan roundabout into a signalised junction have been published, with objectors getting until October 15 to lodge their concerns to An Bord Pleanála.

The two landowners most affected by the ‘land take’ are the owner of the Menlo Park Hotel, John Francis, as well as Noreen and Padraig Collins, who have lived in their home for 50 years from where they run St Anthony’s B&B on the Headford Road.

Mary and Matt Lohan and O’Malley Construction own the other parcels of affected land.

Objections can be made to the CPOs, but valid objections are generally on planning or legal grounds only, according to the steps in the process as outlined by the Society of Chartered Surveyors of Ireland.

General submissions about the design of the junction will not be considered following the decision of councillors by just two votes to approve the four-arm junction in March despite concerns that it will create an ‘iron curtain’ for people living off the Headford Road.

An Bord Pleanála can decide whether to hold a public hearing into those objections at which point the affected parties can formally put their views forward.
