Covid restrictions halt demolition of dilapidated former hotel

From this week’s Galway City Tribune – The long-awaited demolition of the former Corrib Great Southern Hotel has been put on hold as a result of Covid-19 restrictions.

Despite assurances from Galway City Council in November that the hotel, which has become a haven for antisocial behaviour since it closed in 2007, the eyesore on the Dublin Road remains standing.

A spokesperson for Galway City Council this week confirmed that the demolition plan agreed with the site’s owners in November had to be put on ice once a ban was introduced on ‘non-essential construction works’.

“It was our expectation that the demolition would happen in December but as a result of circumstances surrounding the introduction of Level 5 restrictions and restrictions on non-essential construction, it hasn’t taken place.

“There is an agreement in place that it will be demolished. It wasn’t the City Council that were due to do the works, but the owner of the site,” said the spokesperson.
