County walking and cycling strategy adopted

A walking and cycling strategy has been adopted for the county.

The draft report was presented to members at this week’s meeting of the local authority by Senior Engineer Liam Gavin.

He told the chamber that references to the Tuam-Athenry greenway are to be removed from the final strategy, as well as a number of other changes to the draft including updated statistics and alternatives being considered by the NRA for the R446 route.

He explained nine submissions were received for the draft which is a framework to be used to seek funding for certain projects in the future.

The amended strategy as presented by Liam Gavin was passed with the support of 22 members.

Cllr Shaun Cunniffe raised a counter-proposal and asked that the strategy not exclude the possibility of a greenway from Tuam to Kilbannon.

He said if a railway was to become a reality, it would then take precedence over the greenway.

Cllr Peter Feeney said that while he is in favour of greenways, he believes there are
alternatives.

He told the meeting that he feels there is no reason to break what he described as  ‘the link for what is since 1860 an important piece of infrastructure’.

Cllr Peter Feeney said the council has a responsibility to maintain what it has until it can be reopened
