Ambitious plans for a major medical campus in Athenry have got the go-ahead.

County planners have approved plans by Martin Maloney and the Western Alzheimers Foundation to build the development next to the existing Alzheimers centre at Farnablake.

The new centre will contain ten additional en-suite bedrooms and staff area.

It will also include a residential nursing home of 54 bedrooms, dining facilities, swimming pool, sauna, hair salon, therapy room and doctors surgery.

There’ll also be 46 single storey sheltered housing units and a community hall.

The Health Campus section will include four GP offices, a small-injuries and X-Ray clinic, nurses offices, two dental surgeries and occupational therapy and sports injuries facilities.

A separate two-storey building for a counselling service and group meeting rooms will also be part of the overall development.
