Galway County Council has reaffirmed its determination to construct the city outer bypass by means of the IROPI process.

It follows a motion proposed by Cllr Peter Feeney at this week’s meeting which was unanimously supported.

Earlier this month, a judgement was made by the European Court of Justice.

If the Supreme Court rules that the bypass cannot go ahead, then the planning authority can try to progress it through th IROPI process.

Director of Services Frank Gilmore told the meeting that the process of an IROPI application would involve many more environmental studies.

When questioned on timelines, Mr. Gilmore said while it was too early to give a timetable, it would be something in the order of 12 to 18 months.

Cllr Feeney said it is one of the most important projects in the county.
