COUNTY COUNCILLOR SLAMS OPW FOR INACTION AFTER FLOODS OF 95
Date Published: 01-Dec-2009
The findings of a survey carried out over 14 years ago could have saved many of Galway’s flooded homes today.
That’s according to County Councillor Bridie Willers.
Councillor Willers was forced to evacuate her home in Ardrahan as a result of last week’s flooding.
A major survey was carried out in the area by English consultants ‘Southern Water Global’ following the severe floods of 1995.
It concluded that future flooding in South Galway was inevitable and made a number of recommendations to avert and control it.
The Office of Public Works chose to ignore the survey’s findings as it was not financially viable, according to Councillor Willers.
