COUNTY COUNCILLOR LAUNCHES SUICIDE AWARENESS CAMPAIGN

A Galway county councillor, who recently lost his son to suicide, is to launch a public awareness campaign on the issue.

Peter Roche’s son Colin died close to his home in Abbeyknockmoy in November last year.

Yesterday, Councillor Roche told a meeting of the county joint policing committee that over 550 people had died by suicide in Ireland last year.

He also said that suicide is still a ‘taboo subject’ and that attempting a public awareness campaign would be better than doing nothing at all.
