A deputation from Galway county council will meet with the National Parks and Wildlife Service regarding the implementation of the turf cutting ban.

A cessation of turf cutting is due to come into effect on around 30 raised bogs in Galway from the end of the year.

Councillor Tiernan Walshe told a meeting of the council this week that while there was 30 bogs assigned under the EU directive this year, he feared it could be 300 next year.

He also said that people were being threatened with hefty fines for not complying with the order.

County Manager, Martina Maloney told the meeting that a deputation from the council would be sent forward to speak with Parks and Wildlife on the issue.
