County Council to formally request funding for South Connemara fire station
Galway Bay fm newsroom – Galway County Council is to write to the Department of Environment to formally request funding for a fire station in South Connemara.
The matter was raised at this week’s meeting of the local authority where Councillor Tomás Ó Curraoin said having a station was ‘not a luxury but a necessity’.
Councillor Seán O Tuairisg presented statistics to show that areas of similar population such as Donegal and Leitrim were better resourced with 16 and 5 fire stations respectively.
Director of services Eugene Cummins told the meeting that the decision not to locate a station in the area was not about geography and population but about managing the risk.
Over 200 people attended a public meeting in Carraroe earlier this month to debate the case for a station in An Cheathru rua.
Councillor Seán O Tuairisg says the campaign has been going on since for almost 20 years, and locals have no intention of backing down now.
