County Council recovers 200 abandoned animals this year

The number of loose and abandoned animals being recovered by Galway County Council has been described as a ‘frightening statistic’.

Director of Services with responsibility for emergency services, Eugene Cummins made the comments at the last meeting of the local authority saying up to 200 animals have been collected so far this year.

The majority of animals being collected are horses which have been abandoned by their owners.

Up to 200 have been seized in the first five months of this year, that’s the same number as the whole of last year, and also drastically higher than the 2011 number of 50.

Tuam area councillor Mary Hoade says people have a responsibility to look out for animals.
