Galway Bay fm newsroom – Galway County Council has been allocated 200 thousand euro less than anticipated in its local government fund for 2014.

The allocation has been revealed at a meeting of the local authority where budget 2014 is being debated.

Head of Finance Ger Mullarkey has told members that funding of 12.1 million has been allocated from the Department of the Environment, just over 200 thousand euro less than had been hoped.

To allow for this shortfall, he proposed five adjustments to bring the budget back to a balanced position.

These included taking 50 thousand euro out of housing maintenance and another 50k out of street cleaning.

He also proposed to take 25 thousand euro out of mobility grants and another 12 thousand euro out of water monitoring.

However spokesperson for the council technical group Cllr Jimmy McClearn

said the adjustments were not acceptable.

Debate on the budget and the proposed adjustments continues at County Hall this evening.
