Galway county council has spent over one point six million euro on keeping roads across Galway open during severe winter weather.

However the cost to date since December 2009 in maintenance represents a budget OVERSPEND of a quarter of a million euro.

The biggest area of overspending has been on national secondary roads.

The council has spent 585 thousand euro to date, even though the budget allocation was originally 430 thousand euro.

Mayor of county Galway, Jimmy McClearn says this overspend was necessary , however hopes most of the money will be recouped.
