County council official confident of recovering Connemara funds
The head of finance at Galway County Council says he is confident the funding dispute over 8 million euro outstanding for works on the Aran Islands will be resolved.
The Department of the Gaeltacht owes the money to the council for works carried out at Caladh Mor pier on Inis Meain and Kilronan harbour.
The matter was first raised last December, after the council received correspondance from the Government Department.
It claims its only obligation is to pay the original sum on the contracts, a move described as ‘unprecedented’ at the time.
However since then efforts have been ongoing to recover the money owed.
Speaking at a meeting of the local authority this week, Head of Finance Gerard Mullarkey says he expects the matter will be resolved.
